Term | Definition |
---|---|
Summarize | to give the main events of a story in the order in which they happen |
Character | a person or thing in a work of literature |
Setting | where and when a story takes place, including the time of day, the season, or a location |
Plot | the events that happen in the beginning, middle, and end of the story |
Synonyms | words that have similar meanings |
Inference | to come to a reasonable conclusion based on evidence found in the text |
Theme | it’s a universal truth, a lesson or message learned |
Mythology | stories about popular beliefs in different cultures like Greece and Rome |
Verse | writing organized in a rhythmic pattern, as often is the case in poetry |
Rhythm | the regular, repeated sounds of words in a poem |
Meter | a rhythm that repeats a basic pattern in a poem |
Figurative Language | words and phrases that require you to distinguish between literal and figurative meanings. Some examples are similes and metaphors. |
Compare vs. Contrast | analyzing two things to find similarities and differences |
Point of View | the perspective from which a story is told. The narrator can be 1st person, 2nd person, or 3rd person |
Genre | a category of passages, such as fiction and nonfiction that has a particular style, form, and content. Some examples are realistic fiction, mystery, historical fiction, and biography. |
Simile | a type of figurative language that makes comparisons using “like” or “as”. An example is her shirt is as green as grass. |
Metaphor | a type of figurative language that makes a comparison without a linking word. An example is it was a zoo. |
Cite evidence | to show where you found information in the text |
Drama | a play that has scenes and actors |
Main Idea | to tell what a non-fiction piece is mostly about |
Dialogue | conversations between characters |
Author | the person who wrote the book |
Illustrator | the person who drew the pictures in a book |
Antonyms | words that are opposites |
