Unit 2- Pt. 2 Energy

This reviews the vocab found in the second half of the Matter and Energy Unit.

TermDefinition
Photosynthesis a process done by producers/autotrophs that produces glucose and oxygen
Chloroplast an organelle only found in plant cells where photosynthesis takes place
Stoma/Stomata the opening on the underside of leaves. It stays open when water is plentiful and then permits oxygen and CO2 to move in and out of the leaf.
Cellular Respiration a process done by ALL organisms to turn glucose and oxygen into the usable energy of ATP
Mitochondria an organelle found in ALL cells where Cellular Respiration takes place and ATP energy is made.
ATP usable energy for a cell made through the process of Cellular Respiration
Food Web a system of interlocking food chains that show the movement of energy as it moves from producers to consumers
Food Chain a chain of single organisms that shows the exchange of energy from producer to consumers
Energy Pyramid a pyramid look at the levels of the food chain that depicts the lower amount of energy and therefore smaller populations as you move your way up the chain.
Producer/Autotroph Organisms that perform photosynthesis...the bottom level of the food chain
Consumer any organism that eats another organism as an energy source (herbivore, carnivore, omnivore)
Herbivore any organism that only eats and gains energy from producers
Carnivore any organism that only eats and gains energy from eating other consumers (meat)
Heterotroph any organism that eats another organism as an energy source
Decomposer (bacteria/fungi) organisms that break down dead material and recycle the nutrients (carbon, nitrogen) back to the soil.
Ecosystem a community of interacting organisms and the physical environment where they live.
Cycling of Materials the idea that nitrogen, carbon and other elements cycle from organism to organism as they move up the food chain, and are returned to the soil by decomposers when an organism dies.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
