Alliteration The repeating of a consonant sound. ex. Carl's Crazy Carpet Coliseum
Antagonist The person opposing the main character. ex. Goth
Antonym A word that means the opposite. ex. hot/cold
Character A person portrayed in a story or novel.
Climax The highest point of action, the problem is solved.
Conflict The central struggle of the story.
Denouement Wrapping up of loose ends.
Dialogue The direct conversation between characters.
Dynamic Character Character who changes throughout the story.
Exposition The part of a story that introduces the theme, characters, and setting.
Fiction Not real story.
Figurative Language Uses comparison or exaggeration to make a point.
Foreshadowing The reader is given a hint of what might happen later in the story.
Free Verse Has no regular rythm or rhyme but relies on figurative language and rich imagery.
Haiku Japanese poem with 17 syllables that is based on nature.
Image A mental picture.
Indeterminate or Open-Ending Inconclusive ending.
Inference To draw a conclusion based on indications.
Initial Incident The first event that starts the rest of the story.
Legend A popular story unverified handed down from earlier times.
Literal Language Language that means exactly what it says.
Metaphor A comparison of two different things. (doesn't use like or as)
Mood The impression on the feelings of a reader of a story.
Narrator Person telling the story.
Non-fiction Real story.
Personification When you give non-human items human traits.
Plot Order of events in the story.
Protagonist Central character.
Rhyme The repitition of sound.
Rising Action Series of events that lead to the climax.
Setting The time and place of the story.
Simile Comparing to objects using like or as.
Stanza A paragraph in a poem.
Static character The character does not change.
Suspense Apprehension resulting from an uncertain mysterious situation.
Synonym Two words that mean the same or almost the same.
