Which event most affected the rise of the Italian city- states? The three advantages that made them the birthplace. Thriving cities, classical heritage of Greece and Rome, and wealthy merchant class.
What are some of the characteristics of the “Renaissance man”? A “Renaissance man” should be charming, witty, well educated, able to dance, sing, play music, write poetry, skilled rider, wrestler, and swordsman.
What are some of the characteristics of the “Renaissance woman”? A “Renaissance woman” should be charming, not expected to seek fame, expected to inspire art but rarely to create it. Upper-class Renaissance women were better educated than medieval women. Most Renaissance women had little influence in politics.
How did Italy’s cities help to make it the birthplace of the Renaissance? Cities, offered wealth, talent, and new ideas.
What was the attitude of Church leaders and the wealthy towards the arts? Why? They supported the arts by becoming patrons of the art by financially supporting the artists. They did this because they wanted to beautify their communities and show their own importance.
How did the study of the classics influence branches of learning such as history, literature, and the philosophy? The study of classical texts led to a different outlook on life, emphasizing human potential and achievements.
How is the humanism of the Renaissance reflected in its art? Explain with examples. Renaissance art dealt with realism, human body, everyday life, individual achievement.
What did Raphael paint? School of Athens
What did Michelangelo paint? Sistine Chapel
What did Leonardo Da Vinci paint? The Last Supper
What were the differences between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance in the attitude toward worldly pleasures? In the Middle Ages, some people believed that denial of worldly pleasures would please God. During the Renaissance, many believed that God intended them to enjoy those things.
What is the definition of the Renaissance? Rebirth and revival of art and learning. (Greek and Roman knowledge)
What is the definition of Humanism? A movement that focused on human potential and achievements.
What is the definition of Secular? Worldly issues.
What is a Patron? A person who gives financial or other support to a person.
What is perspective? A technique that shows three dimensions on a flat surface.
What was the vernacular? A native, local language.
