Which event in the European exploration of the east is the most significant? Explain with references from the text. Around 1600, the English and Dutch began to challenge Portugal's dominance over the Indian Ocean trade.
What role did the Renaissance play in launching an age of exploration? They encouraged a new spirit of adventure and curiosity. This spirit prompted europeans to explore the world around them.
What was Prince Henry’s goal and who actually achieved it? His goals were to reach the source of treasures in the east and to spread the christian faith. Vasco De Gama achieved this goal in 1498 when he discovered the riches in calicut.
What European countries were competing for Asian trade during the age of exploration? Portugal, Spain, Britain, Netherlands and France
What way did the Treaty of Tordesillas reveal about European attitudes toward non-European lands and peoples? Europeans thought that they were superior and they weren't willing to change their ways for anyone
What were the motives in Europeans exploration in the 1400's? The desire to grow rich and to spread Christianity, coupled with advances in sailing technology, spurred an age of European exploration
In what ways did Europeans owe some of their sailing technology to other people's? To determine their location at sea, sailors used the astrolabe, which the Muslims had perfected
What process did Columbus and his followers begin? Exploration of the Americas.
Why were most of the Spanish explorers drawn to the Americas? For gold - wealth, alternate trade routes, and expand their countries influence.
Which country was the richest and most powerful in the 16th century, and why? By the middle of the 16th century, Spain had created an American empire. It included New Spain (Mexico and parts of Guatemala),as well as other lands in Central and South America and the Caribbean.
How might Columbus's view of the Taino have led the Spanish to think they could take advantage of and impose their will on the natives? They were too generous
What might have been some similarities in character between Cortés and Pizarro? They were both greedy and in search of gold
Through what modern states did Coronado lead his expedition? Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas
Why was Italy the birthplace? 2. Thriving cities, wealthy merchant class, classical texts connected to Greek and Roman knowledge
What are some of the characteristics of renaissance men and women? Renaissance men who excelled in many fields was praised as a universal man. A young man should be charming, witty, well educated, knew how to dance, sing, play music, and write poetry. Renaissance women were expected to know the classics and be charming.
How did Italy’s cities help to make it the birthplace of the Renaissance? Cities offered wealth, talent and new ideas
What was the attitude of Church leaders and the wealthy towards the arts? They found it appealing, and they used it to demonstrate their own importance, as having your portrait in a public square add to your importance.
How did study of the classics influence branches of learning such as history, literature and philosophy? Led to different outlook on life
How is the humanism of the Renaissance reflected in its art? -Realistic statues of other humans and body -Raphael drew School of Athens painting showing the figures of Renaissance like Michelangelo -Vernacular writing (native language, not latin)
What were the differences between the people in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance in the attitude towards worldly pleasures? They were that people in the Middle Ages viewed that they would suffer on Earth and be rewarded in heaven, while Renaissance people thought that they could indulge in worldly pleasures.
Which event do you think was most important? I think the gutenberg press because it could produce books much faster than a person could and it could replicate religious works which many people could afford and buy at low costs.
How did Albert Durer’s work reflect the influence of the Italian renaissance? Because he was the only artist who drew things as they really were and he drew living things. He was one of the only artists who drew animals such as his famous painting "young hare".
What was one way the Renaissance changed society? It's art because artists started to draw and paint things and depicted them as they really were, such as the Mona Lisa who was painted exactly how she looked and it is known that the eyes follow you.
Why was the invention of the printing press so important? Printing changed society by making information inexpensive and available enough for society at large. Greater availability of books led to a greater quest for knowledge and literacy.
How were the works of German painters different from those of the Flemish painters? Because German painters painted classic myths and religious subjects and Flemish painters focused on ordinary subjects and detail connected to those subjects.
What reasons did humanists give for wanting to reform society? Because humanists wanted things to start over new after the disease and plague and war struck so enlightenment ideas were put into place and new ways of doing things were created
How did the availability of cheap books spread learning? Because books were made more available and at cheaper prices, many people bought more books and learned from them and the more books they bought at cheap prices, the more they read and learned.
