| Theme | The author's message, or lesson |
| Characterization | Complete picture of character: actions, thoughts, looks, etc |
| Protagonist | main character working towards a goal |
| Antagonist | force/character working against main character |
| Dynamic Characters | Characters that undergo a MAJOR change |
| Static Characters | Little/no change in character's actions, thoughts or emotions |
| Conflict | Problem of the story |
| Setting | Time and place (where and when) |
| Tone | Writer's attitude |
| Climax | MOST exciting point |
| Resolution | Conflict is solved |
| Flashback | THE STORY STOPS and the author goes back in time to describe something that happened before the story took place |
| Foreshadowing | Hints or clues that suggest what will happen next |
| Verbal Irony | You say something, but you mean something very different |
| Dramatic Irony | The reader (audience) knows more than the characters do |
| Situational Irony | You expect something to happen, but something "opposite" happens |
| Suspense | Excitement or anxiety: when you can't wait to see what happens |
| Rhetoric | Techniques of effective or persuasive writing and speaking |
| Figurative Language | Language that should NOT be taken literally |
| Simile | A comparison of two unlike things using like or as |
| Metaphor | A comparison of two unlike things |
| Hyperbole | An OBVIOUS exaggeration |
| Personification | Giving an object human qualities |
| Imagery | Many VIVID descriptions given by the author to provide the readers a "picture" in their mind |
| Allusion | A reference to a famous person, event or other piece of literature |
| Mood | The overall atmosphere or emotional aura of a work |
