Academic Words #3

QuestionAnswer
argument when an author or speaker makes a case for or against a topic.
claim a statement that an author believes to be true.
cause and effect a text structure that explains why things happen; every cause has an outcome or result.
compare and contrast to analyze how two things are alike or different.
chronological order when a text is organized in time order; from first to last.
figurative language language that is not literal such as: similes, metaphors, personification, hyperbole, imagery, onomatopoeias, etc.
informative text a text that is providing information; newspaper articles, research papers, fact books, etc.
mood the feeling or atmosphere a writer creates for a reader.
tone the way an author feels about a topic or subject.
problem/solution an author or text presents a problem and then offers a solution.
