Critical Literacy

QuestionAnswer
Context The multitude of factors which shape the meaning of a text within the social framework of its reading. The meaning or reading of a text is determined by a huge range of social, cultural, time, composer, reader factors.
Discourse The language associated with a particular life experience or identity contrast (like race, gender, etc.) People can belong to many discourses that all affect the way the text is interpreted.
Discursive Background We each have a unique personal and discursive background. All based on the discourses (our conversations) we have in our lives.
Intertextuality When we assign meaning to what we read - we are looking back through all the discourses we have been a part of - the combination of texts.
View of the World How the author paints the world in the reading.
Gaps and Silences Created when the author intentionally or unintentionally chooses to include some pieces of information and omit others.
Gap A place in a text where something is left out and it is up to the reader to fil in the blank.
Silence When the viewpoints or voices of a certain person or group is left out or never heard.
Positioning Author frames their writing from a certain point of view or attitude.
Agency A character may be granted or denied empowerment ( the ability to do something).
Deconstruction Breaking down the meaning of what you are reading.
