How does oil form? process begins with tiny plants and animals that died in the oceans millions of years ago, over time, most of them turned to rock, the weight of the water heat from Earth's core and chemical changes turned some of the remains into oil and natural gases.
why is so much oil buried under Southwest Asia? because millions of years ago the area was under water. When the Iranian and Arabian tectonic plates hit, they created spaces where oil was formed and trapped.
Are oil reserves distributed equally among the countries of Southwest Asia? No, the regions largest country, Saudi Arabia, contains about one quarter of the worlds known oil reserves.
How has oil made the people of Southwest Asia better off? rich, life expectancy has increased, death decreased, people surrounding countries with oil benefits
Why isn't per capita GDP always an accurate reflection of people's wealth? born rich, born poor, assumes everyone gets paid evenly, not true wealth is divided equally among its citizens
What are some examples of why some oil countries haven't been able to end poverty? money has not been spent, oil money not able to end in Iraq or Yemen, Saddam use oil money for weapons and war instead of improving life.
What have been the goals of Southwest Asian OPEC members? Their goal was to have a steady supply of oil flowing out of their countries. Also keep oil prices steady.
What 2 realities have limited OPEC's power? OPEC can not control all of the world's oil sales, It's members export less than half then the crude oil, can't control countries decision
What and why are the two types of coalition members in the Persian Gulf? Oil importing and did not want oil supply threatened, oil exporting and did not want to lose control of own oil reserves.
5 most oil- rich countries in world? Saudi Arabia, Iraq,United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Iran
5 least oil- rich countries in world? Pakistan, Guatemala, DMC, Albania, New Zealand
what was life like for farmers in the Aral sea region when cotton was king? It was pretty successful. Farmers crop production increased when the soviet government built dams on the Amu and Syr rivers to irrigate their cotton.
How have farmers been affected by the shrinking Aral Sea? A shrinking Aral Sea meant increasing salty soil. Cotton production fell as the land around the sea became less suitable for agriculture. Also the growing season shortened.
What was life like for people in the fishing industry when the sea was rich in fish? About 95 million pounds of fish were harvested from the lake each year. Fish canneries in Moynaq produces 20 million cans of seafood a year. Also helped workers get jobs.
How was fishing industry affected by the shrinking Aral Sea? the water was 90 miles from the edge of the water it also love to see very salty not many fishes live there anymore. workers lost their jobs also thousands of people had left
What was life like for people of the Aral sea region when water was plentiful? before the 1960s the Aral Sea provided Water for nearby towns
How has people's health been affected by the shrinking Aral sea? many people have stomach problems and liver disease from drinking polluted water air pollution causes tuberculosis and throat cancer. Also poverty causes health problems.
