Electricity

Electrical circuits and current

TermDefinition
Electricity Energy in its electrical form (Eelect)
Electrons A particle that carries energy though the circuit . It is part of an atom and has a negative charge
Conductors These atoms have loosely bound electrons, the electrons can wander, conductors allow elections to pass though it
Insulator Prevents or STOPS electricity from traveling through it
Battery Stores Echem/converts Echem to Eelect
Current Amount of charge (e-) that passes a point in the circuit every second
What does a multimeter do It measures the amount amps and volts that are in a circuit
Units for current Ampère = Amps = A
Resistor A device that transforms Eelect into the flavor of energy you want
What is the symbol for a resistor in a circuit drawing? ------/\/\/\/\/-----
What is the symbol for a battery in a circuit drawin? ------| l------- (Big end is positive, small end is negative)
What is the symbol for a multimeter in a circuit drawing? An A inside of a circle
Conventional current flows from (+) end of battery to the (-) end
What is a proton? A positively charged particle that makes up some of the nucleus
What is an electron? A negatively charged particle that orbits around an atom, they carry Eelect throughout the circuit
Where do electrons come from? They are already in the metal atoms of the conductors in the circuit
What is a Coulomb? A unit of measurement for measuring the amount of electrons in a circuit, like how you count eggs in dozens, you count electrons in Coulombs
How many electrons are in 1 Coulomb? 6.25 x 10^25 electrons
What does voltage measure? Voltage measures the ENERGY POSSESSED by 1 COULOMB of electrons
Equation for voltage Voltage = Joules/Current
Potential difference (Delta)V is the difference of energy across the device
How does the resistance change as the electrons move through the circuit? It doesn't
How do you change the resistance Ina circuit? To change the resistance you must change the resistor material or geometry (diameter, circumference)
How does current change as it travels through the circuit? It doesnt
Vtotal = ... V1 + V2 + V3 + V4 ....
How long is the filament in a lightbulb? 1 meter

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
