Organisational Structure

Why is a structure necessary? To facilitate the achievement of objectives.
Define Organisational Structure. Organisational structure is concerned with the way the work is divided up and allocated. It outlines the roles and responsibilities of individuals and groups within the organisation.
What are the 5 building blocks of 'Mintzbergs Effective Organisation? *Operating Core *Strategic Apex *Middle Line *Support Staff *Technostructure
What is the operating core? It is made up of those individuals who perform the tasks of producing the product or providing the service
What is the Strategic Apex? It is made up of those individuals who formulate and operate strategy and ensure the organisation executes its mission in order to serve the owners of the orgsnisation
What is the middle line? It links the strategic apex to the operating core.
What is the technostructure? A separate group of people who decide what the organisations technology and procedures should be.
Who are support staff? An addition of other administrative units to provide services to itself.
What 6 successful organisational structures did MINTZBERG identify? *Simple Structure *Machine Bureaucracy *Professional Bureaucracy *Divisionalised Form *Adhocracy *Missionary Organisations
What is a simple structure? Single owner / manager in a small business.
What is Machine Beaurocracy? Arises from the power of the technstructure.
What is Professional Beaurocracy? Arises from the dominace of the operating core eg hospital staff.
