Voting and Elections

TermDefinition
Polling Place The location where voting is carried out
Precinct A geographical area that contains a specific number of voters
Ballot The list of candidates in which you cast your vote
Absentee Ballot One that allows someone to vote without going on election day
Returns Ballots and results of an election
Exit Polls A survey taken at poll's to see how people voted
Electorate All the people that are eligible to vote
Apathy A lack of interest
Electoral College A group of people in each state that vote for the president
Initiative A procedure in which citizens can propose a law or constitutional amendments
Proposition A petition asking for a new law
Referundum A way for citizens to vote on state or local laws
Recall A special election in which a citizen can vote to remove a public official from office
Electors Person appointed to vote in presidential election for major cadidates
Winner-Take-All System A system in which the the person who wins the popular vote usually wins the whole state
Propaganda Certain idea that may involve misleading message designed to manipulate the truth
Political Action Committees (PACs) Political organization established by a corporation, labor union designed to support candidates by distributing money
Soft Money Donations given to political parties and not designated to a particular candidate
Incumbents A politician who has already been elected into office
