1. Arch bridge A type of bridge that relies on a curved, semi-circular structure for support.
2. Beam bridge A fixed structure consisting of a series of steel or concrete bars placed parallel to traffic and supporting the roadway directly on their top flanges
3. Suspension bridge A bridge in which the weight of the deck is supported by vertical cables suspended from larger cables that run between towers and are anchored in abutments at each end.
4. Cable-stayed bridge A bridge in which the weight of the deck is supported by a number of cables running directly to one or more towers.
5. Cantilever bridge A bridge formed by two projecting beams or trusses that are joined in the center by a connecting member and are supported on piers and anchored by counterbalancing members
6. Truss Bridge A bridge in which the loads are supported by trusses.
What is meant by the span of a bridge? The horizontal distance between two supports of the bridge

What is the most common shape used in bridge building? Why? Triangle because of the Strength to cost ratio
What happens to the live weight as it passes over a bridge? The weight gets transferred through the members to the supports and back to the ground.
What are the two most important things to take into consideration when deciding on a bridge design? Cost and style
What does it mean if a bridge member is under tension? The member that is under tension is being pulled apart
What does it mean if a bridge member is under torsion? The member is being twisted.
What does it mean if a bridge member is under compression? The bridge member is being pushed together.
Why would an engineer consider a bridge’s appearance when choosing a bridge design? A well thought out bridge design will flow and add beauty to the surrounding area
