Poetry techniques

TermDefinition
Simile Compares one thing to another using 'like' or 'as'
Metaphor Says that one thing is another
Rhyme These are words that sound the same
Alliteration Repeating of a series of consonant sounds
Onomatopoeia The sound of a word-the meaning is also similar
Personification Giving human qualities to non-human things
Descriptive language (adjectives) These are words that provide some descriptions of people, places and things.
Hyperbole Deliberate exaggeration
Imperative Command Expresses a command that must be done.
Symbolism This is a symbol that represents something else.
Verbs A word that describes an action
Repetition The repeating of phrases or words
