| animal classification | sort animals into groups based on common characteristics or traits |
| mammal | vertebrate that has lungs, gets milk from its mother, and has hair or fur |
| amphibian | cold-blooded vertebrate, can live on land and water. Many are born with gills and then grow lungs. |
| bird | vertebrate that has a beak, two wings, two legs, and lungs; lay eggs; the only animals with feathers |
| reptile | cold-blooded vertebrate with scales; most lay eggs |
| fish | vertebrate that breathes with gills and lives in water |
| metamorphosis | transformation, a big change |
| hibernate | to pass the winter sleeping |
| animal adaptation | special characteristics that allow animals to survive in their environment |
| migration | regular movement of birds and other creatures from one part of the world to another and back again |
| animal mimicry | when one living thing resembles a different kind of living thing |
| camouflage | disguise |
