| trial and error | A method for finding the solution of an equation by trying several test numbers. |
| empty set | The set containing no members that is also called null set. |
| solution set | The set of all answers of an equation or inequality. |
| pan balance | A tool used to weigh objects or compare weights. |
| pan balance problem | A problem in which equations are represented with a scale and weights. |
| term | In an expression, a number of a product of a number and one or more variables. |
| constant | A quantity that does not change. |
| coefficient | The number, or constant factor, in a variable term. |
| simplify an expression | To rewrite an expression by combining like terms and constants to make it easier to solve. |
| like terms | In an algebraic expression, numbers that contain the same variable(s). |
| equivalent equation | Equations that have the same solution set. |
| inverse - operation strategy | An equation - solving strategy that involves applying opposite operations to both sides of the equation to get the variable alone. |
