Unit 6 Vocabulary for EveryDay Math

TermDefinition
trial and error A method for finding the solution of an equation by trying several test numbers.
empty set The set containing no members that is also called null set.
solution set The set of all answers of an equation or inequality.
pan balance A tool used to weigh objects or compare weights.
pan balance problem A problem in which equations are represented with a scale and weights.
term In an expression, a number of a product of a number and one or more variables.
constant A quantity that does not change.
coefficient The number, or constant factor, in a variable term.
simplify an expression To rewrite an expression by combining like terms and constants to make it easier to solve.
like terms In an algebraic expression, numbers that contain the same variable(s).
equivalent equation Equations that have the same solution set.
inverse - operation strategy An equation - solving strategy that involves applying opposite operations to both sides of the equation to get the variable alone.
