FOOD_VOCAB.

USEFUL VOCAB FROM COOKING BOOKS.

TermDefinition
BAKE Cook in an oven.
BEAT Combine vigorously to force air into the mixture..
BITE-SIZE A piece of food small enough to be eaten in one mouthful.
BOIL Cook in hot water at 100º.
BONELESS A piece of meal or fish with the bones removed.
BOWL A round, deep dish or basin used for food or liquid.
CHOPPED Cut into small pieces.
CHUNK A lump or small amount ( usually for had ingredients)(chunk of meat/ fish.
CLOVE One of the small separate sections of a bulb.
CORED A fruit ( usually apples) which has their centre taken out.
CUBED Cut into small squares.
DIP Immerse quickly in liquid.
DRAIN Remove water or liquid.
DUST Cover lightly with a powdered substance.
FRY Cooked in hot oil.
GARNISHED Decorate lightly.
GRATE Use a grater to shred food.
GRILL Cook with a direct heat source.
HANDFUL A quantity that fills hand.
KNOB A small lump of a substance. ( a knob of butter)
LUMP Chunk ( a sugar lump or two?)
MARINATE Soak food in a sauce before cooking.
MASH Reduce to a soft mass by beating or pressure (not purée)
MELT Become liquified by heat.
MINCED Chopped into small pieces, smaller than cubed. (minced meat for meat balls)
MIX Combine.
PASTRY A dough of flour, shortening and water used as a base and covering in baked dishes such as pies.
PEEL Take way the skin.
PEELER Something that peels.
PINCH The amount you can hold between your thumb and firs finger.
PUFFED-UP Inflated.
PURÉE A smooth and creamy substance of crushed fruit or vegetables.
RAW Not cooked.
ROASTING TIN A container used to cook in the oven.
ROLL Flatten with a rolling pin.
ROLLING PIN A usually wooden cylinder for flattening.
RUB Spread over.
SAUTÉ Fry quickly in a little hot fat.
SEASON Add salt and pepper or other spices.
SIMMER Cook over a low flame. (simmer the soup for 15 minutes)
SLICED Cut into a thin flat piece ( a slice of bread).
SKEWER A thing metal or wooden spike or stick. ( chicken skewer)
STIR IN Mix in food.
STRAINER A filter or sieve to remove water.
TABLESPOON A measurement used in cooking, equivalent to 1/2 fluid once, or 3 teaspoons or 15ml.
TEASPOON A measurement used in cooking, equivalent to 1/6 fluid once, or 1/3 tablespoon or 4.9ml.
WHIPPED Beaten into froth. (strawberries and whipped cream)
WHISK Beat or stir with a rapid movement (sometimes with a mixer or whisk)
WOBBLE Move unsteadily form side to side.
WRAPPED UP Enclosed in something.
ZEST The outer layer of citrus fruit. ( lemons, oranges)
