| Noun | Used to identify a peson, place, or thing |
| Verb | The main part of the sentence that expresses an action, an occurrence, or a state of being |
| Adjective | Used to describe other words |
| Adverb | a word or phrase that modifies or qualifies an adjective, verb, or other adverb or a word group, expressing a relation of place, time, circumstance, manner, cause, degree |
| Pronoun | a word that can function by itself as a noun phrase and that refers either to the participants in the discourse or to someone or something mentioned elsewhere in the discourse |
| Conjunction | a word used to connect clauses or sentences or to coordinate words in the same clause |
| Preposition | a word governing, and usually preceding, a noun or pronoun and expressing a relation to another word or element in the clause |
| Interjection | an abrupt remark, made especially as an aside or interruption |
| Sentence | a set of words that is complete in itself, typically containing a subject and predicate, conveying a statement, question, exclamation, or command, and consisting of a main clause and sometimes one or more subordinate clauses. |
| Compound sentence | sentence with more than one subject or predicate. |
