| Term | Definition |

| Mass extinction | When a large number of species goes extinct in a short amount of time |
| Endangered species | Species that is likely to become extinct if protective measures are not taken immediately |
| Threatened species | Species that has a declining population and is likely to become endangered if not protected |
| Exotic species | Species that is not native to a particular region--these are also referred to as invasive or nonnative species |
| Poaching | Illegal hunting, fishing, or harvesting |
| Endemic species | Species that are native to and found only in a limited area |
| Biodiversity | Number of different species in a given area |
| Gene | Piece of DNA that codes for a specific trait that can be inherited by an organism's offspring |
| Keystone species | A species that is critical to the functioning of an ecosystem |
| Ecotourism | Form of tourism that supports the conservation and sustainable development of ecologically unique areas |
