Biodiversity Week 5

TermDefinition
Mass extinction When a large number of species goes extinct in a short amount of time
Endangered species Species that is likely to become extinct if protective measures are not taken immediately
Threatened species Species that has a declining population and is likely to become endangered if not protected
Exotic species Species that is not native to a particular region--these are also referred to as invasive or nonnative species
Poaching Illegal hunting, fishing, or harvesting
Endemic species Species that are native to and found only in a limited area
Biodiversity Number of different species in a given area
Gene Piece of DNA that codes for a specific trait that can be inherited by an organism's offspring
Keystone species A species that is critical to the functioning of an ecosystem
Ecotourism Form of tourism that supports the conservation and sustainable development of ecologically unique areas
