| alliteration | two or more words near eachother that begin with the same sound |
| antagonist | person who tries to stop the protagonist |
| aside | breaking the fourth wall, character talks directly to the audience without other characters hearing |
| blocking | where people stand on stage |
| indirect character description | describes the character's actions |
| direct character description | gives facts about the character |
| convention | an unspoken agreement between the audience and the players |
| conflict | two opposing forces meet |
| external conflict | forces can be seen |
| internal conflict | within a person |
| drama | written to be performed, limited time, seen and heard |
| epic | long narrative poem that has adventure, god intervention, heroic figures, vast setting, and elevated style |
| epithet | a repeated description often marked by a hyphen |
| figurative language | creating pictures in a reader's mind |
| first person pov | told from the character's perspective, use "i" |
| flashback | content in a story that refers back to events that occured before the story begins |
| foot | one piece of a metrical pattern |
| hyperbole | an exaggeration meant to create an image |
| hubris | overweaning pride |
| irony | the opposite of what one expects |
| kleos | everlasting fame |
| limited omniscient pov | reports on thoughts and feelings of one or two characters |
| lyric poem | express a feeling |

| point of view | the way in which a reader is presented with the materials of a story |
