Atom smallest unit of an element
Element substance that can not be broken down into a smaller substance
Valence electron electron in the outermost layer of an atom
Compound substance made up of two or more different elements
Molecule group of atoms held together by chemical force
Ion atom, radical or molecule that has a negative or positive charge
Cohesion force that holds molecules together
Adhesion attractive force between two bodies or substances
Solution mixture in which two or more substances are dispersed
Acid any compound that increases the amount of H+ atoms in a solution
Base any compound that increases the amount of OH- atoms in a solution
pH value to express the acidity or alkalinity(base) of a system
Buffer a substances that neutralizes small amounts of acids or bases
Polar molecule with opposite charges
