| Athena- | Daughter of Zeus and goddess of wisdom, purposeful battle and. Athena assists Odysseus and Telemachus with powers, and she speaks up for them in the councils of the gods on Mt Olympus. She often appears in disguise as Mentor, an old friend of Odysseus. |
| Lotus eaters- | Odysseus and his crew finally escape. A storm sent by Zeus sweeps them along for nine days before bringing them to the land of the Lotus-eaters, where the natives give some of Odysseus's men the intoxicating fruit of the lotus |
| Eurycleia- | Eurycleia is a servant in the household of Odysseus who took care of both him and his son, Telemachus, during their childhood days. During Odysseus' absence, Eurycleia serves the role of the confidant for both Penelope and Telemachus. |
| Sirens- | They approach the island of the lovely Sirens, and Odysseus, as instructed by Circe, plugs his men's ears with beeswax and has them bind him to the mast of the ship. He alone hears their song flowing forth from the island, promising to reveal the future. |
| Circe- | From there, Odysseus and his men travel to Aeaea, home of the beautiful witch-goddess Circe. Circe drugs a band of Odysseus's men and turns them into pigs. When Odysseus goes to rescue them, Hermes approaches him in the form of a young man. |
| Hermes- | Hermes is the messenger of the gods. Hermes helped Odysseus twice in the Odyssey. He gave him the magical herb Moly to protect him form Circe's witchery, and he convinced Calypso to let him off of her island. |
| Penelope- | Penelope is the wife of the main character, the king of Ithaca, Odysseus. She only has one son by Odysseus, Telemachus, who was born just before Odysseus was called to fight in the Trojan War. |
| Ithaca- | Ithaca was, in Greek mythology, the island home of the hero Odysseus. |
| Tiresias- | A Theban prophet who inhabits the underworld. Tiresias meets Odysseus when Odysseus journeys to the underworld. He shows Odysseus how to get back to Ithaca and allows Odysseus to communicate with the other souls in Hades. |
| Aeaea- | Was a mythological island said to be the home of the sorceress Circe. In Homer's Odyssey, Odysseus tells Alcinous that he stayed here for a year on his way home to Ithaca. |
| Odysseus- | The protagonist. Odysseus fought w/ heroes at Troy and now struggles to return to his kingdom in Ithaca. Odysseus is the husband of Penelope and the father of Telemachus. Though a strong and courageous warrior, he is most renowned for his cunning. |
| Poseidon- | God of the sea. As the suitors are Odysseus's mortal antagonists, Poseidon is his divine antagonist. He despises Odysseus for blinding his son, the Cyclops Polyphemus, and constantly hampers his journey home. |
| Phaeacians- | They're excellent mariners and skilled with all kinds of ocean activities and are instrumental in Odysseus's return to Ithaca. they're very laid-back and helpful, and they listen to Odysseus's tale of his journey with rapt attention. |
| Charybdis- | Charybdis is one of the monsters Odysseus must pass with his men. Graphic image: Charybdis is a whirlpool that swallows the sea and vomits it back up again. |
| Calypso- | She keeps fabled Greek hero Odysseus on her island to make him her immortal husband. According to Homer, Calypso kept Odysseus prisoner at Ogygia for seven years. |
| Polyphemus- | The cave's inhabitant returns it's the Cyclops Polyphemus, the son of Poseidon. He devours two of Odysseus's men on the spot and imprisons Odysseus and the rest in his cave for future meals. |
| Telemachus- | Telemachus focuses on his father's return to Ithaca.. He visits Eumaeus, the swineherd, who happens to be hosting a disguised Odysseus. After Odysseus reveals himself to Telemachus due to Athena's advice, the two men plan the downfall of the suitors. |
| Menelaus- | Menelaus - King of Sparta, brother of Agamemnon, and husband of Helen, he helped lead the Greeks in the Trojan War. He offers Telemachus assistance in his quest to find Odysseus when Telemachus visits him. Helen - Wife of Menelaus and queen of Sparta. |
| Eumaeus- | In Homer's Odyssey, Eumaeus is the first mortal that Odysseus meets upon his return to Ithaca after fighting in the Trojan War. He has four dogs, 'savage as wild beasts,' who protect his pigs. |
| Helios- | Also known as the sun god, is said to have had 7 herds of oxen and seven flocks of sheep, each numbering fifty head. |
| Troy- | The Trojan War was waged by the Greeks against the city of Troy for the purpose of retrieving Helen and returning her to Menelaus. In The Odyssey, Odysseus is a Greek hero of the Trojan War who left his family to fight in the war. |
| Zeus- | Zeus is the king of the gods and he is the one who reassures Athena a goddess, that Odysseus will eventually make it home, and that he would make it home with great riches. |
| Antinous- | The most arrogant of Penelope's suitors. Antinous leads the campaign to have Telemachus killed. Unlike the other suitors, he is never portrayed sympathetically, and he is the first to die when Odysseus returns. |
| Cicones- | The Cicones were a Homeric Thracian tribe, whose stronghold in the time of Odysseus was the town of Ismara (or Ismarus), located at the foot of mount Ismara, on the south coast of Thrace (modern Greece). |
| Helen- | Husband is Menelaus and queen of Sparta. |
| Aeolus- | Aeolus gave Odysseus a favourable wind and a bag in which the unfavourable winds were confined. Odysseus' companions opened the bag; the winds escaped and drove them back to the island. |
| Anticlea- | Odysseus makes a trip to the underworld to seek the advice of the dead prophet Tiresias. In the underworld, he encounters many spirits, including that of his mother, Anticlea. |
| Eurymachus- | A manipulative, deceitful suitor. |
| Laertes- | Father of Odysseus, Laertes After their reunion, the two of them go to Odysseus' home to fend off the families of the dead suitors. Athena infuses vigour into Laërtes, so he can help Odysseus. He kills Eupeithes, father of Antinous. |
| Melanthius- | The brother of Melantho. Melanthius is a treacherous and opportunistic goatherd who supports the suitors, especially Eurymachus, and abuses the beggar who appears in Odysseus's palace, not realizing that the man is Odysseus himself. |
| Scylla- | Scylla was a monster that lived on one side of a narrow channel of water. |
