Notes on Sentence Structure

| What is a independent clause? | It has a subject and predicate and completes a thought. |
| What is a dependent clause? | It has a subject and predicate but does not complete a thought. |
| Example of independent clause: | Sue ate a piece of candy. |
| Example of dependent clause: | When Sue ate a piece of candy, |
| What is a phrase? | A phrase is a group of words that NEVER have a noun/verb pair together. |
| List two types of phrases: | Prepositional and Participle |
| Give three examples of a prepositional phrase. | Around the corner, During the movie, At Goody's |
| Give three examples of a present participle phrase. | Running in the hallway, Eating an ice cream, Tired of his arguing |
| Define a simple sentence | A simple sentence can have many different subjects and predicates but only completes a single thought. |
| Example of a simple sentence with a phrase | Billy look around the room for the door. |
| Example of a simple sentence with compound predicates | The kids played and stumbled on the jungle gym |
| Define compound sentance | Has two or more independent clauses joined by a FANBOY |
| Example of a compound sentance | The new boy joined a club and made friends. |

| Define complex sentence | A dependent clause that has a subject and predicate so it it can't stand alone. |
| What is another name for a dependent clause? | Subordinate Clause |
| Example of complex sentence - independent clause first | I eat pizza because it makes me feel good. |
| Example of complex sentence - dependent clause first | Because it makes me feel good, I eat pizza. |
| What is a fragment sentence? | It is a part of a sentence written as if it was a complete sentence. |
| Example of a fragment sentence missing predicate | The students on Rolling Thunder. |
| Example of a fragment sentence missing subject | Jumping off tables in the cafeteria. |
| What is a run-on sentence? | This is two or more more sentences written as if one sentence |
| Example of a run-on | I love to ski, the runs at Bogus are amazing! |
| List three ways two fix a run-on sentence | Add a period, add a semi-colon, create a compound sentence |
