| Phrase | a group of words that do not contain both a verb and its subject; not a sentence, but a part of a sentence |
| Clause | a group of words that contain both a verb and its subject |
| Independent Clause | a clause that can stand on its own as a complete sentence |
| Dependent Clause | a clause that cannot stand on its own as a complete sentence |
| Coordinating Conjunctions | FANBOYS (for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so) |
| Correlative Conjunctions | either...or, neither...nor, not only...but also, both...and ex: Neither Sam nor Lyla read the book. |
| Participle | a verb that works as an adjective |
| Gerund | verb that works as a noun (usually ends in -ing) |
| Infinitive Phrase | "to" followed by a verb ex: to walk, to run, to think, to sit |
