Literary elements

QuestionAnswer
Imagery Descriptive writing used to create a mental picture that appeals to the readers five senses.
Central idea Main, most important information that the author wants you to learn from a piece of text.
Internal conflict Character struggles to make a decision, take an action, or overcome a feeling.
External conflict Character struggles against an outside force such as another character, nature,or society.
Dialogue Verbal discussion between characters: a conversation between two or more characters.
Mood Authors feelings or attitude towards a subject in a piece of text.
Tone Feeling created in the reader by a piece of text.
Adjective Describes a noun.
Noun Person, place, thing, or idea
Pronoun replaces a noun: I, you, it, he, she.
Plot Sequence of events in a story.
Flashback A memory that gives background information to help the reader to understand the present.
Foreshadowing Author uses clues to hint at something that might happen in the future.
Protagonist Most affected by the antagonist in a story; actions drive the majority of the story.
Antagonist An obstacle to the protagonist in a story; causes an issue for the protagonist.
Symbolism something that stands for or represents a person, place, word, idea, or object
Observation something that is seen, "The sky is blue."
Prediction An educated guess of something that might happen in the future; supported by observations and inferences.
Authors purpose The reason an author writes- persuade, inform, entertain.
Setting Time and place of a story.
Characterization How an author reveals the personality traits of a character; describes a character.
Theme A message or life lesson that an author wants you to learn from a piece of text.
Simile Compares two unlike things using like or as.
Metaphor Compares two unlike things without using like or as.
Inference Using what you know and evidence from the text to figure out a piece of text.
Narrative Another word for "story"
Summary A shortened collection of important facts and details that tell what happened in a story.
Point of view The narrator's perspective in a piece of text.
1st Person point of view The story is told by a character in a piece of text.
3rd person limited point of view The story is told by a narrator and tells thoughts/feelings of one character- "he," she," they"
3rd person omniscient story is told by a narrator and tells thoughts/feelings of all characters- "he", "she", "they"
Personification giving a noun-human object the characteristics of a human.
Hyperbole Extreme exaggeration
Onomatopoeia Use of words to imitate sounds> "POW", "BOOM"
Alliteration Repetition of same constant sound at the beginning of several words in a row.
