Energy Transfer By Heating

QuestionAnswer
Explain the greenhouse effect Short electromagnetic waves penetrate the Earth's atmosphere and are absorbed by objects. These objects give off larger electromagnetic waves that can't make it out of the Earth's atmosphere.
What makes a surface good at absorbing and emitting radiation? It has to be matt and dark.
Describe the energy of particles in a gas compared to those of a solid The particles in a gas have more energy and move round more.
How does conduction occur in a metal? The ions in a metal vibrate with kinetic energy when heated. The free electrons carry this energy from the hotter ions to the colder ones.
Define conduction Conduction is the heat transfer between substances through contact.
How does convection occur in a fluid? The hotter parts of the fluid lose their density due to the fact that their particles become more spaced out when heated. This hot fluid rises and has a cool liquid to take its place.
