Energy Transfer By Heating
Question | Answer |
---|---|
Explain the greenhouse effect | Short electromagnetic waves penetrate the Earth's atmosphere and are absorbed by objects. These objects give off larger electromagnetic waves that can't make it out of the Earth's atmosphere. |
What makes a surface good at absorbing and emitting radiation? | It has to be matt and dark. |
Describe the energy of particles in a gas compared to those of a solid | The particles in a gas have more energy and move round more. |
How does conduction occur in a metal? | The ions in a metal vibrate with kinetic energy when heated. The free electrons carry this energy from the hotter ions to the colder ones. |
Define conduction | Conduction is the heat transfer between substances through contact. |
How does convection occur in a fluid? | The hotter parts of the fluid lose their density due to the fact that their particles become more spaced out when heated. This hot fluid rises and has a cool liquid to take its place. |
Name three factors that increase the rate of evaporation | Increased heat, stronger breeze, Larger Surface Area |
