Expressions and Equations Vocabulary

QuestionAnswer
Exponent a number that tells how many times a given base is used as a factor
Base a repeated factor in an expression with an exponent
Algebraic Expression a mathematical phrase that combines numbers, operation signs, and variables
Coefficient the numerical factor of a term containing a variable
Independent Variable in an equation with two variables, the variable whose value affects the dependent variable; for example," x" in y = x + 1
Variable a letter or number used to represent a number
Equation a statement that two quantities are equal; contains an = sign
Inverse Operation operations that undo each other, such as addition and subtraction or multiplication and division
Term a number, variable, product or quotient in an expression
Dependent Variable in an equation with two variable, the variables whose value is affected by the independent variable; for example, "y" in y = x + 1
Numerical Expression a phrase that contains numbers and operations or a combination of numbers and operation signs
Greatest Common Factor the highest number that can be divided evenly into two or more numbers
Expression a phrase that contains numbers and operations or a combination of numbers and operation signs
Inequality a mathematical statement that compares two expressions and includes an inequality symbol such as < or >
Order of Operations a set of rules that determines the correct sequence for evaluating expressions
