Elements of Fiction

TermDefinition
character a person or an animal who takes part in the action of a literary work
dialogue a conversation involving two or more character
narrator the person or character who is telling the story
background info information that the author provides at the start of the story to explain what's going on
external conflict a struggle that takes place between a character and some outside force
first person point of view the narrator uses words like "I" and "we" and is part of the action
climax the highest point of the story when the problem cannot get any worse
plot the series of events that revolve around the central conflict
resolution the point of the story when the problem has come to an end
conflict a struggle between two people or things in a literary work
setting the time and place in which a story takes place
theme a central or main idea in a literary work: a message or lesson
internal conflict a struggle that takes place within a character
third person point of view the narrator uses words like "he, she, it, they" and is not a part of the action
