Unit 4 Vocabulary for EveryDay Math

| Expression | A grouping of math symbols that may include numbers, variables, operation symbols, and grouping symbols |
| simplify an expression | to rewrite an expression by combining like terms and constants. |
| base | the number that is raised to a power. |
| exponent | a number used in exponential notation to tell how many times the base is used as a factor. |
| variable | A LETTER or other symbol that can be replaced by any number |
| algebraic expression | An expression that contains a VARIABLE. |
| substitute | To replace one thing with another-like replacing variables with numbers |
| coefficient | The number, or CONSTANT factor, in a variable term. |
| equation | A number sentence that contains an EQUAL sign. |
| open sentence | A number sentence with a variable that is either true or false depending on what value is substituted for the variable. |
| mean absolute deviation | In a data set, the average of distances individual data points are from the average of the whole data set. |
| Distributive Property | A property that relates multiplication and addition or subtraction. this property gets its name because it “distributes” a factor over terms inside parentheses. |
| Associative Property | A property of multiplication (but not division) that says that when you multiply three numbers, you can change the grouping without changing the product. |
| Commutative Property | A property of addition ( but not subtraction) that says that changing the order of the numbers being added does not change the sum. |
| inequality | A number sentence with > < ≥ ≤ or ≠ |
| relation symbol | A symbol such as < , > , and = used to express a relationship between two quantities |
| solution set | The set of all ANSWERS for an equation or inequality |
| magnitude of a number | The size of a number: the number’s distance from 0. |
| absolute value | The distance between a number and 0 on the number line. |
