| Personification | When an idea, object, or animal is given human characteristics |
| Onomotopoeia | A word that sounds like the action; a word that makes a sound |
| Theme | The message that the author wants you to know |
| Allusion | Making a reference to another piece of literature |
| Plot | The sequence of events in a story |
| Exposition | Exposes us to the characters and setting |
| Characterization | describing characters through; actions, physical description, dialogue, thoughts, feelings, and how others respond to them |
| Tone and Mood (Setting) | How the author makes us feel through the description of the story |
| Juxtapasition | When the author describes two things in a completely opposite way |
| Metaphor | Making a direct comparison between two things |
| Hyperbole | Extreme exaggeration |
| Figurative Language | Language used in a special way in literature to give an effect to the reader |
