Simile Comparing one thing to another using "like" or "as"

Theme The message that the author wants you to know
Allusion Making a reference to another piece of literature
Plot The sequence of events in a story
Exposition Exposes us to the characters and setting
Characterization describing characters through; actions, physical description, dialogue, thoughts, feelings, and how others respond to them
Tone and Mood (Setting) How the author makes us feel through the description of the story
Juxtapasition When the author describes two things in a completely opposite way
Metaphor Making a direct comparison between two things
