Decomp, Redox Vocab.

QuestionAnswer
Reduction A chemical change in which electrons are gained and the charge goes down (gets reduced)
Oxidation A chemical change in which electrons are lost and the charge goes up
Redox A chemical change in which one species is oxidized and another is reduced; a combination of reduction and oxidation
Oxidizing Agent Causes something to get oxidized
Reducing Agent Causes something to get reduced
Half-reaction Half of a whole redox; just reduction or oxidation
Oxidation Number The charge of a certain element
Decomposition (Reaction) A reaction in which a single compound breaks down to form two or more simpler substances; can be redox
Electrolysis The process in which an electric current is used to break apart a compound
