Earthworm Anatomy and Function

| ventral | belly side of the worm; lighter |
| prostomium | part which hangs over the mouth; has some sensory ability |
| mouth cavity | entrance to the digestive tube |
| brain | bi-lobed; control center of the earthworm's body |
| pharynx | used to swallow food; tough |
| esophagus | connects the pharynx to the crop; food tube. adds saliva to moisten the food |
| aortic arches | contracts and functions as hearts; there are 5 |
| seminal receptacles | receives sperm from another worm |
| seminal vesicles | where sperm is stored for this worm |
| crop | food is stored here until ready to be digested |
| gizzard | where food is broken down by a grinding action; food is mechanically broken down here |
| nephridium | removes cellular wastes from the body cavity; acts similar to our kidneys |
| intestine | digestion of food occurs here; food chemically broken down here and absorbed into the blood |
| dorsal blood vessel | carries blood forward to the heart; larger vessel |
| ventral blood vessel | carries blood back toward skin and intestine; smaller vessel |
| ventral nerve cord | connects brain with the rest of the body; white cord that extends the length of the body and carries messages |
| clitellum | a thick band that forms a cocoon for the eggs |
| setae | bristles that help the earthworm move |
