Punctuation
| Term | Definition |

| Period | - used to mark the end of a sentence - used to indicate an abbreviation - used as an ellipsis or when the writer wants to indicate that only part of the sentence or thought is present - used after a single word to show emphasis or a important thought |
| Comma | 4 I's: Introducer, Interruptor, Items in a series, and IC, cc IC |
| Exclamation Mark | - used to express exasperation, astonishment, or surprise, or to emphasize a comment or short, sharp phrase - Also be used to mark a phrase as humorous, ironic, or sarcastic |
| Question Mark | - used at the end of a direct question to a person, never for a reported question Ex: Do you like to shop? |
| Colon | - used to expand on a sentence that precedes the following phrase, it often introduces a list - used to express time |
| Semicolon | - used to join two independent clauses either with no conjunction or a conjunctive adverb - used to separate items in a series which already contain commas |
| Quotation Mark | - used to cite what someone else said Ex: The mother told the children, "Always eat your vegetables before your dessert." |
| Apostrophe | - can be used for contractions ā-can be used to show possession of something |
| Hyphen | -used to join two words or parts of words together while avoiding confusion or ambiguity -used to preserve written clarity such as where there are letter collisions, prefixes are added, or of a family relationship -used with numbers |
| Dash | - used to add parenthetical statements or comments in much the same way as brackets, but less formal so do not use in formal writing - can be used to add emphasis Ex:: I could be the best juggler in the world- the world may never know. |
| Parenthesis | - used for when you want to add further explanation, an afterthought, or comment that is not in the main line of thought but is implied from it Ex: She(Mary) went to the store to buy some milk. |
