Word Classes for GCSE English
| Term | Definition |

| Verb | This is a doing word: play, listen, sit. |
| Verb | It can be in different tenses: Present- I play football all the time Past- I played football last weekend Future- I'll be playing football this afternoon |
| Verb | Also includes 'to be' and 'to have' 'To be' behaves quite differently: Present- I am an apprentice Past- I was a student Future- I will be an electrician |
| Adverb | This is used to describe a verb. It can say WHEN something happened: I left early for work |
| Adverb | This is used to describe a verb. It can say WHERE something happened: I was waiting outside when you arrived |
| Adverb | This is used to describe a verb. It can say HOW something happened: He ran quickly |
| Noun | This is the word for a thing, place or person. They can be: proper concrete abstract OR collective |
| Proper nouns | Name of a person/ place/ day /month: Greg, Sheffield, Christmas Day, Arctic Monkeys, January. Always has a capital letter. |
| Concrete nouns | Name of a person/ place/ thing that can be counted: classroom, table, cable, dog. |
| Abstract nouns | Name of a feeling or emotion: love, fear, humour, wisdom. |
| Collective nouns | Names for groups of people or things: team, pride, class, bundle. |
| Adjective | This is used to describe a noun. |
| Qualitative adjective | Describing the qualities of the thing, person or place (physical or emotional)- tall, kind, useful, sad, beautiful, shiny, blue. |
| Quantitative adjective | Describing the quantity of the noun- more, all, some, half, more than enough. |
