Oceanography
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Watercycle | The continues movement of earth water from the ocean to the atmosphere to the land back to the ocean. |
| Point source pollution | Pollution that comes from a specific site. |
| Nonpoint source pollution | Pollution that comes from many sources rather than just from one single site. |
| Transpiration | Evaporation from plants and animals. |
| Condensation | The change from gas to liquid. |
| Evaporation | The change from liquid to gas. |
| Precipitation | Liquid water that falls to the earth. |
| Watercycke | |
| Ocean Currents | Streamlike movements of water. There are 2 currents deep currents and surface currents |
| Tides | Daily changes in the level of the ocean water. |
| High tides | |
| Crest, trough, wave length,wave height | |
| What are the stages of the watercycle? | Continues process of water to the land then to the atmosphere back to the land. |
| When do Neap tides occur? | At 1st quarter and last quarter(90° angle) |
| Gulf stream | |
| What are the parts of a wave? | |
| What is the Corrilois Effect? | The apperant curving of a moving object from a straight path due to the earth rotation. |
| Describe the major features of the ocean floor. | Continental Slope- Begins at the edge of the continue shelf. Continental Rise- Base of the deep ocean basin. Abbysel Plain- Broad flat part of the deep ocean basin. Mid-ocean bridge- Mountain chain that form where tectonic plates separate. |
| Describe the major features of the ocean floor part 2. | Ocean trench- huge cracks in the deep ocean basin (very deep). Continental Shelf-Begins at the shoreline and slopes gently toward open. Seamounts- a submerged mountain on the ocean floor of a volcanic origin. If a seamount keep erupting, island forms. |
| Describe the feature of the ocean floor part 3. | Rift valley- A long narrow valley that forms as tectonic plates separate. Volcanic islands- Volcano on the ocean floor that is an island. |
| What causes tides? | The pull of the moon's gravity. |
| When do Spring tides occur? | At full moon and new moon (when the sun ,moon, and the earth is alligned). |
| What 2 major elements make up the most of the dissolved solids in the ocean? | Sodium and Chlorine |
| A warm water current in the gulf of Mexico | |
| Explain the impact ocean currents have on climate (GULF STREAM). | The climate would get warmer and wetter or cooler and drier than other places at the same latitude. |
| High tides | When the moon's gravity pulls earth water in a bulge. |
| Low tides | Water drawn away from areas from the the moon's gravity. |
| Waves | Energy creates by wind that travels through the ocean water |
| How often do high tides and low tides occur? If a high tide occurs at 12 noon on Friday, what time will the high tide occur Saturday. | 12:50 |
