| Simile | A comparison between two unlike things using 'like' or 'as'. |
| Metaphor | A comparison saying something is something else. |
| Alliteration | Repetition of the first letter sound in a group of words close together. |
| Personification | Giving human qualities or characteristics to animals or objects. |
| Oxymoron | A figure of speech in which apparently opposite terms appear next to each other. |
| Hyperbole | Exaggerated statements or claims not meant to be taken literally. |
| Onomatopoeia | Using words to imitate sound. |
| Rhyme | The use of words with matching sounds. Can be in the middle or at ends of lines. |
| Rhythm | The pace or beat of the poem. Can vary from line to line. |
| Imagery | Words that appeal to the senses and help us to picture something. |
| Couplet | A pair of lines, one after another, that rhyme and form a complete thought. |
| Emotive language | Words and phrases that cause an emotional response in the reader. |
| Enjambment | A line ending in which the thought is continued onto the next line. |
| Caesura | A pause near the middle of a line. |
| Assonance | Repetition of a vowel sound. |
