Reactant A substance or molecule that participates in a chemical reation
Product A substance that forms in a chemical reaction
Law Of Conservation Of Mass Mass can't be created or destroyed; can go from one state of matter to another
Single Displacement Element + compound = new element + new compound; like displaces like
Double Displacement Compound1 + compound2 = compound3 + compound4; like displaces like
Balance An Equation Adding coefficient to follow the law of conservation of mass
Synthesis Element/compound + element/compound = one new compound
Decomposition Compound -> element/compound + element/compound
Combustion O2 is a reactant; hydrocarbon (CnHn) -> CO2 + H2O
Activity Series A series of elements that have similar properties and that are arranged in descending order of chemical activity
Precipitate A solid that's produced as a result of a chemical reaction in a solution
Spectator Ions Ions that are present in a solution in which a reaction is taking place but that do not participate in the reaction
Net Ionic Equation An equation that includes only those compounds and ions that undergo a chemical change in a reaction in an aqueous solution
Oxidation A reaction that removes one or more electrons from a substance
Reduction A chemical change in a which electrons are gained
