| stanza | length, placement and group of lines (when a poem is divided into groups with a similar pattern) |
| free verse | no formal pattern (neither rhyme nor rhythm) |
| blank verse | no formal rhymes scheme; formal meter |
| alliteration (jingle and jump for joy) | repetition of initial consonant sounds in nearby words |
| assonance (a greed as deep as the sea) | repetition of the vowel sounds in a word |
| consonance ("fleet foot and sound mind'') | repetition of consonant sounds within or at the ends of words |
| rhyme (stray gray tray) | repetition of final sounds in 2 or more words |
| rhyme scheme | pattern formed throughout a poem by the rhymes at the ends of lines |
| onomatopoeia | buzz, swish, plop |
| rhythm | pattern or beat of stressed and unstressed syllables in a line poetry |
| meter | repetition of rhythm in a poem |
| imagery | creation of sight, sound, touch, smell and/or taste with descriptive words (appeal to the senses) |
| simile (my life is like an open book) | a comparison using like or as |
| metaphor (jealousy is a green-eyed monster) | comparison without like or as |
| personification ( the tree dance in the wind) | giving an inanimate object human characteristics or qualities |
