Chi The circulating life force whose existence and properties are the basis of much Chinese philosophy and medicine.
Kola nut The seed of the cola tree, which contains caffeine and is chewed or made into a drink.
Cassava The starchy tuberous root of a tropical tree, used as food in tropical countries but requiring careful preparation to remove traces of cyanide from the flesh.
Harmattan A dry, dusty easterly or northeasterly wind on the West African coast, occurring from December to February.
Nannygoat A female goat.
Splendor Magnificent and splendid appearance; grandeur.
Tentative Done without confidence; hesitant.
Sacrifice An act of slaughtering an animal or person or surrendering a possession as an offering to God or to a divine or supernatural figure.
Beancake A West-African fritter made from black-eyed peas.
Calabash An evergreen tropical American tree that bears fruit in the form of large woody gourds.
