Dendrology

Dendrology means Study of Trees
Plant has to have these features to be a tree Single woddy stem, over 4.5meters height
Plant is considered a shrub if it multi-stemmed, under 4.5 meters in height
Morphology Study of shape, gerneral appearance or form of an orginism (influenced by environment)
Pinophyta or Gymnosperms -includes conifers -leaves are needle or scale like -seeds naked or borne in cone (older species of tree)
Magnoliophyta or Angiosperm -broad-leaf tree and shrub - leaves are simple and compound (younger species of tree)
Opposite Arrangement lateral buds arise on opposite sides of stem at the same node and directly across from each other ex. Ashes, Maples
Alternate Arrangement lateral buds are not opposite each other on the axis but are borne singly at regular intervals at different nodes ex. birches, populars, basswood, elms
Nodes the part of a plant stem from which one or more leaves emerge, often forming a slight swelling or knob
Simple Leaf undivided only on leaf
Compound Leaf the blade of the leaf is divided into many leaflets ex. Ash, Poison Ivy
Sessile directly attached from the leaf
Stalked attached through the stem
Pinnately feathery like leaflets -primary divisions arranged on each side of a common stalk
