| Magnoliophyta or Angiosperm | -broad-leaf tree and shrub - leaves are simple and compound (younger species of tree) |
| Opposite Arrangement | lateral buds arise on opposite sides of stem at the same node and directly across from each other ex. Ashes, Maples |
| Alternate Arrangement | lateral buds are not opposite each other on the axis but are borne singly at regular intervals at different nodes ex. birches, populars, basswood, elms |
| Nodes | the part of a plant stem from which one or more leaves emerge, often forming a slight swelling or knob |
| Simple Leaf | undivided only on leaf |
