Respiratory System
| Term | Definition |

| Respiration | The process by which cells break down simple food molecules such as glucose to release the energy they contain |
| Mucus | A thick, sticky liquid produced by the body |
| Cilia | The hairlike projections on the outside of cells that move in a wave like manner |
| Pharynx | The throat |
| Trachea | The windpipe; a passage through which air moves in the respiratory system |
| Bronchi | The passages that directed the direct air into the lungs |
| Lungs | An organ found in air-breathing vertebrates that exchanges oxygen and carbon dioxide with the blood |
| Alveoli | Tiny sacs of lung tissue specialized for the movement of gases between air and blood |
| Diaphragm | A large muscle located at the bottom of a mammal's rib cage that functions in breathing |
| Larynx | The hollow muscular organ forming an air passage to the lungs and holding the vocal cords in humans and other mammals; the voice box. |
| Vocal Cord | Folds of membranous tissue that project inward from the sides of the larynx to form a slit across the glottis in the throat, and whose edges vibrate in the airstream to produce the voice. |
