2. Why were the border states important to the North? Kentuckey and Mississippi had parts of major rivers in them, that are necessary for tranportation. If Maryland joined the South, then Virginia and Maryland would surround the nations capital. And Delaware was close to the Northern city of Philadelphia.
3. How did a strong belief in states' rights affect the South during the war? The individual states refused to give the Confederate Government sufficent power. As a result, the Government found it difficult to fight the war effectively.
5. Compare Northern and Southern aims and strategies.
Northern aims and strategies It was to bring the Southern states back into the Union. Slavery later became a serious aim to the North. In their strategy, first they would blockade the South's ports to prevent supplies coming in. Second, the Union intended to gain control of the Mississippi to cut Southern supply lines and to split the Confederacy.Third, they planned to capture Richmond
Southern aims and strategies for the South, the aim was to win recognition as an independent nation. Independence would allow Southerners to preserve their traditional way of life- a way of life that included slavery. For their strategy, the South planned to defend its homeland, holding on to as much territory as possible until the North tired of fighting.
6. On pg. 462, write a conclusion based on the data presented Overall the North had the advantages of supplies and resources, but in some category's, such as in exports, the South was only a couple percent away.
