Esperanza Rising

Give a few reasons why Esperanza is upset. She can't hear the Earth's heartbeat, Papa died, and now she is living with no money
What does Esperanza see as Juan is driving to the camp? Flat lands of cotton, grapes, and especially cantaloupes
What is located inside of the boxes that the families collect? Cantaloupe
When can the families pick fruit legally? When the markers are down
Who does Esperanza meet that she doesn't like? Marta from another camp
How would you describe Marta? Rude, opinionated, prejudice, and bold
What is a strike? It is when multiple people stop working because they think something is unfair
How would you describe the cabin that Esperanza has to stay in? Small, ceiling is covered with newspaper and cardboard, and not at all like Esperanza's old home.
Why couldn't a woman live alone in the camp? A woman couldn't live alone in the camp because a man needed to be at the head of the household
Describe Esperanza's feelings in the last chapter we just read. Esperanza is feeling sad and keeps thinking that she is rich. She also thinks that when her grandmother comes to California she will bring a lot of money and they will buy a big house much better than this one
What are Esperanza's two jobs? Esperanza has to take care of Lupe and Pepe, the two twins, and she has to sweep the platform. Sweeping the platform will take a little bit of money off of the rent.
When Esperanza tries to sweep the platform, what happens? Since Esperanza has never cleaned anything in her entire life, she humiliates herself when she tries cleaning.
Who is Isabel? Isabel is Miguel's cousin. She is eight years old. According to the story, the author compares her to a small deer.
Who is Isabel's best friend? Silvia
When Sylvia touches Esperanza with her dirty hands, why doesn't Esperanza pull away? Esperanza remembers mama's speech about if she married uncle Louis, that they would be very miserable and apart from each other.
What does Marta call Esperanza when she tries to clean the platform and fails? Cinderella
What is one clue why the story is named that Esperanza Rising? When Esperanza is in the field and she lays down and tries to feel the earth heartbeat, she feels as if she is floating above the earth surface.
And Esperanza is driving up the hill with her servants cousins, why do her ears suddenly feel tight? It is due to elevation change.
What is a arroya? A silver line of water from an unknown river
What gender is Lupe? Girl
What gender is Pepe? Boy
What does Josephina look like? Round and fairer skin
How old are the twins? One year old
How do the train rides go? Mexico - Los Angeles - California
Why does Miguel also miss Papa? Papa always kept his promises and he showed him more about his love of trains
Why does Isabel get nervous when Esperanza can't clean? Isabel goes to school next week and Esperanza can't clean the babies diapers.
What was in the package that needed water? Roses from El Rancho de la Rosas
Why does Isabel ask Esperanza if she is going to the jamica instead of assuming that she's going? When Esperanza tried to sweep, she failed and she was embarrassed because the whole camp saw
What did Marta abuse? A kitten
Why does Marta abuse the animal? Marta thinks it is unfair because she isn't rich and doesn't have the privileges that rich people have.
What is the newspapers (ceiling) used for in the cabin? To keep out the wind.
What is Mama going to pray for at the Church in Bakersfield? Papa's memory, Miguel will find a job at the railroad, to Our Lady to help Anza take care of the twins, and for Anza
What is Esperanza going to pray for at the Church in Bakersfield? Papa's memory, Miguel will find a job at the railroad, to Our Lady to help her take care of the twins, and a white coconut candy with a red stripe on top.
Why is Mama going to pray for Esperanza? Stated at the end of chapter 7, it says that she would stay strong even when times get tough.
Why is Esperanza happy to bathe? Before they had to bathe in cold water and she had to wipe herself down instead of bathing.
How do they heat the water for the baths? They heat it by putting the water over a stove and warming it up; takes very long

How did Alfonso get the roses for the statue? He dug into the ground before they bloomed.
Who teaches Anza to sweep? Miguel
What does Alfonso and Miguel make in the backyard of the cabin? A statue of Our Lady surrounded with roses from El Rancho de la Rosas. Also made with a washtub cut in half.
What did Esperanza feed the babies that made them sick? Plums
What did Esperanza do when she found out the babies were sick? She gave them rice water
How did Esperansa do when she was making the dinner? She burnt the beans
Since Esperanza was too grossed out by the diapers, what did she do? She piled them up in the corner.
What type of storm occurred in the book? Dust storm
What happened during the dust storm? Since Esperanza's family was working in the fields, they had to hide behind crates until a truck came, but a truck did not come.
Who/What was effected by the storm Mama, the strike that was going to happen, and people's jobs who worked in the field
What is the cat that Isabel took home named? Chiquita
How is that person affected? The dust got into Mama's lungs and she keeps coughing
What disease does Mama have? Valley Fever
What happens when you get this disease? You can get a s Small version of it and your body overcomes it or you can get a severe version of it and you will probably die. It takes six months to fully recover if you survive.
What does the blanket that Abuelita croqueted smell like? Peppermint
Where does Esperanza want to work? In the Sheds
Why does Esperanza want to work? So Abuelita can come to California faster
Why is Mama pale? She has valley fever and is always sleeping
What makes Mama sicker? Sadness
What is Esperanza's job? Picking out potato eyes
