Volcanoes

QuestionAnswer
Volcano A weak spot in the crust where molten material, or magma, comes to the surface
Lava When magma reaches the surface
Magma A molten mixture of rock-forming substances, gases, and water from the mantle
Ring of Fire formed by the many volcanoes that rim the Pacific Ocean
Hot Spot an area where material from deep within the mantle rises and then melts forming magma
Shield Volcano At some places on Earth’s surface, thin layers of lava pour out of a vent and harden on top of previous layers. Such lava flows gradually build a wide, gently sloping mountain
Cinder Cone Volcano If a volcano’s lava has high viscosity, it may produce ash, cinders, and bombs. These materials build up around the vent in a steep, cone-shaped hill or small mountain called a cinder cone.
Composite Volcano Composite volcanoes are tall, cone-shaped mountains in which layers of lava alternate with layers of ash.
Sill When magma squeezes between horizontal layers of rock, it forms a sill.
Dike Magma that forces itself across rock layers hardens into a dike.
Botholith Huge large body masses of rock from the core of many mountain ranges
Lava Plateau Instead of forming mountains, some eruptions of lava form high, level areas called lava plateaus.
extinct The volcano is extinct which means it will not be able to errupt again or do any harm
dormant having normal physical functions suspended or slowed down for a period of time
active The volcano is active and can errupt any time and do harm but also create beautiful landforms.
Element A substance that cannot be broken down into other substances
Viscosity The physical property of liquids, the resistance of a liquid to flowing
Silica Made up of particles of the elements oxygen and silicon
Pahoehoe Hot, fast-moving lava
Aa Cool, slow-moving lava
Compound A substance made of two or more elements that have been chemically combined
Volcanic Ash Fine rocky particle as small as a speck of dust
Magma Chamber Beneath a volcano, magma collects in a pocket
Crater Forms on top of a volcano and around the central vent
Vent Molten rock and gas leave the volcano through an opening
Pipe a long tube in the ground that connects the magma chamber to Earth’s surface.
Caldera The huge hole left by the collapse of a volcanic mountain
Hot Spring is an area where material from deep within the mantle rises and then melts, forming magma.
Geyser is a fountain of water and steam that erupts from the ground.
