Literary Elements

TermDefinition
Protagonist The leading character or one of the major characters in a drama, movie, novel, or other fictional text.
Antagonist A person who actively opposes or is hostile to someone or something; an adversary.
Dynamic Character A literary or dramatic character who undergoes an important inner change, as a change in personality or attitude.
Static Character A literary or dramatic character who undergoes little or no inner change; a character who does not grow or develop.
Foreshadowing Be a warning or indication of (a future event).
Flashback A scene in a movie, novel, etc., set in a time earlier than the main story.
Suspense A state or feeling of excited or anxious uncertainty about what may happen.
Cliffhanger An ending to an episode of a serial drama that leaves the audience in suspense.
Subplot A subordinate plot in a play, novel, or similar work.
Dialogue A conversation between two or more people as a feature of a book, play, or movie.
