RI8 Arguments-EMS

TermDefinition
fact a statement that can be proved or disproved
opinion a statement that is debatable; uses words like best, most, everybody, etc.
hook the way an author interests their readers in the topic
red herring a fact that is related to the topic but has nothing to do with what the author is claiming about it. (distraction technique)
outline the main points and organization of an argument or essay
claim the statement that the author is trying to prove
support evidence
evidence facts, descriptions, effects, etc. of a reason or claim
topic sentence The main idea of a paragraph; reason
thesis statement claim; statement the author is trying to prove
argument statements for or against something; often has "should"
