Literary Divices

TermDefinition
1st person point of view The story is about the person telling the story.
3rd person limit point of veiw The narrator only knows the thoughts and feelings of one character.
3rd person omniscient point of veiw The narrator knows the thought and feelings of all the characters.
Allegory A story, poem, or picture that revels a hidden meaning.
Alliteration The occurrence of the same repetition of the same sound of closely connected words.
Antagonist The villain of the story.
Character The mental and moral qualities distinctive to an individual.
Climax The part of the story where you have to make a decision.
Exposition An explanation for an idea or theory.
Externial Conflict The struggle between a person and an outside force.
Falling action Parts of the story after the climax and before the very end.
Figurtive language Using words not literally.
Foreshadowing A warning about events coming up in a story.
Imagrey Draws pictures in your head.
Interal conflict The struggle in characters mind.
Memoir A record of events written by a person.
Metaphor Comparing 2 things without using like or as.
Motivation The reasons someone act in a certain way.
Onimanapia a word that sounds like a sound.
Personifitaction Giving nonliving things human trates.
Plot The sequence of events in a story.
Protagonist the HERO!!
Resolution The problem of a story is worked out the ending of the story.
Rising action a serises of events in the plot that creates a suspence.( where the conflict happens
Setting the time place and conditions of a story
Simile Comparing 2 things using like or as.
Theme A truth about life that can be learned from the story, It is timeless and universal.
