Literary Devices

TermDefinition
1st Person POV The person telling the story
3rd Person Limited POV The narrator only knows the thoughts and feelings of one character
3rd Person Omniscient POV A tequince of 3rd person
Allegory A story that can be interpreted to reveal a hidden meaning
Alliteration Repitition of beginning consonant sounds
Antagonist The "Villian" of the story who gets in the way of the protagonist
Character A person/thing in a story
Climax The turning point in a story where the character must make a decision about the conflict
Exposition The beginning of the story where we meet the characters and find out the setting
External Conflict A struggle between a character and an outside force
Falling Action Where the problem in the story is being worked out
Figurative Language The use of words with a meaning that is different that literal interpretation
Foreshadowing A warning about events coming up in a story
Imagery The use of language to create a picture in the reader's mind
Internal Conflict A struggle in a characters mind
Memoir A record of events written by a person having personal knowledge of them
Metaphor A comparison without using like or as
Motivation The reasons for a characters behavior
Onomatopeia Words that sound like what they mean
Personification Giving human characteristics to non-human thing
Plot The series of events in a story
Protagonist The "Hero" of the story, the character the reader becomes emotionally attached to
Repetion The action of repeating words or phrases to make an idea more clear
Resolution The problem of the story is worked out or resolved
Rising Action Where the conflict happens
Setting The time/place/conditions of a story
Simile Comparing two things using like or as
Theme A truth about life that can be learned from the story; timeless, universal
