Unit 1 Math Vocab

TermDefinition
Rational Number any number that can be expressed as a fraction
Integer positive and negative whole numbers, including zero
Absolute Value the distance a number is from zero
Percent out of 100
Equivalent Fractions fractions that have the same value
Opposites two numbers that are the same distance from zero but on opposite sides of the number line.
Commutative Property it states that in addition and multiplication, order does not matter
Associative Property states that you can add or multiply regardless of how the numbers are grouped (it does not matter where you put the parenthesis)
Benchmark reference number used to estimate the size of other numbers
Distributive Property lets you multiply a sum by multiplying each addend separately and then add the products
