Motion and Energy vocabulary

Motion The state in which one’s object distance from another is changing
Reference point A place or object used for comparison to describe the position or motion of a person or object
Distance The length of a path between two points
Displacement The length and direction of a straight line between starting and ending points
Scalar A measurement that have magnitude, or size, only
Speed rate at which someone or something is able to move or operate
Velocity the speed of something in a given direction
Acceleration increase in the rate of speed of an object
Vector A measurable quantity that consists of both a magnitude and a direction
Energy the ability to do work or cause change
Kinetic energy the energy an object has from its motion
Potential energy stored energy that results from the position or shape of an object
Gravitational energy potential energy related to an object’s height
Elastic energy potential energy of objects that can be stretched or compressed
Mechanical energy a object’s combined kinetic energy and potential energy
Conservation of energy a law that says when one form of energy is transformed to another, no energy is destroyed in the process
Work done when an object is caused to move a certain distance
