Motion and Energy vocabulary
| Term | Definition |

| Motion | The state in which one’s object distance from another is changing |
| Reference point | A place or object used for comparison to describe the position or motion of a person or object |
| Distance | The length of a path between two points |
| Displacement | The length and direction of a straight line between starting and ending points |
| Scalar | A measurement that have magnitude, or size, only |
| Speed | rate at which someone or something is able to move or operate |
| Velocity | the speed of something in a given direction |
| Acceleration | increase in the rate of speed of an object |
| Vector | A measurable quantity that consists of both a magnitude and a direction |
| Energy | the ability to do work or cause change |
| Kinetic energy | the energy an object has from its motion |
| Potential energy | stored energy that results from the position or shape of an object |
| Gravitational energy | potential energy related to an object’s height |
| Elastic energy | potential energy of objects that can be stretched or compressed |
| Mechanical energy | a object’s combined kinetic energy and potential energy |
| Conservation of energy | a law that says when one form of energy is transformed to another, no energy is destroyed in the process |
| Work | done when an object is caused to move a certain distance |
